2010 New Year’s Resolutions For Investors
Here are some resolutions for investors to try out in 2010:
1) Resolve not to read, watch or react to any financial news.
2) Assuming you just can’t do (1) above, resolve to write down in detail the predictions from your favorite market gurus and then go back and see how it came out. Be ruthless in your assessment and don’t give them any slack. Pretend real money was on the line with their calls.
3) Resolve to check your portfolio returns infrequently (this is a behavioral finance trick that causes less anxiety and can prevent investors from making snap decisions).
4) Resolve to do no trades in your financial accounts except those required for rebalancing, contributions, living expenses or tax purposes.
5) Resolve to use the words “I don’t know” when people ask you about what the markets are going to do.
