Fallkniven F1 Knife Review

0

The Fallkniven F1 is simply one of the best knives I’ve ever used. It is a tough 4″ blade made of laminated steel with a practical length and great ergonomics. Designed in Sweden, the F1 features tough grips that work in the cold and wet. I recommend getting the Zytel sheath. It is simple, reliable and safe. This is one of my preferred knives to carry when I’m out camping. Highly recommended and well worth the money. Did I mention it’s also the official survival knife for Swedish Air Force Pilots? It’s a great knife!

You can buy the Fallkniven F1 knife through my Amazon store. You’ll get a great price, support the site, and it costs you nothing extra. Thanks!

Trangia Stove and Clikstand

0

I have been using a Clikstand for years with a Trangia burner. The setup is really light, slick and efficient. It holds a 1.0L titanium pot nicely and can bring water to boil very quickly even in windy conditions. Highly recommended! If you want another slick little set, consider the mini-Trangia cook kit. Not quite as nice as the Clikstand, but still very good.

A Simple Fire Kit

0

In this video I review the contents you may consider for a hiking fire kit. This is my “full” kit but I normally don’t carry all of this stuff. Mostly I will have a lighter, Swedish Firesteel, some vaseline and cotton balls tinder and maybe a candle. Combine this with a knowledge to use pine resin to start a fire and you have a good base. It’s a good idea to have multiple ways to get a fire going when in the backcountry.

Starting a Fire with Pine Resin

0

In this video I demonstrate a neat technique of using pine resin as a very intense fire starter. I am collecting pin sap from nodules on the trunk of an evergreen onto a piece of bark. A couple quick strikes with the Swedish Firesteel and it lights.

Pine resin burns very hot and intensely and I can get damp wood going with it. Don’t get it on you because it burns like napalm. This is a very useful trick to have up your sleeve if you are having trouble starting a fire in wet conditions. You’ll be surprised at how quickly and hot it will burn.

Fire Starting Tinder Review: Vaseline and Cotton, Tinderquik and WetFire

0

I am posting a series of videos I’ve made on outdoor gear and skills. This was the first I made about testing various types of homemade or commercial fire tinders for hiking. I review homemade Vaseline and Cotton Balls, Tinderquik and WetFire tabs. All three of these are easily lit with a lighter or firesteel (I like the Swedish Firesteel personally).

My findings basically are that the Vaseline and Cotton Balls works fine. That’s what I’ve carried for years and it always works. Tinderquik’s are nice because they are not greasy and you can keep them in an emergency kit without getting everything messy. WetFire I do not recommend. The packaging is fragile and if it gets a hole in it they expire and crumble.

You can buy Tinderquik and other real-world tested fire making supplies at my Amazon store. Thanks!
